JCoSS Lag B'Omer

Welcome to the JCoSS Lag B'Omer page!

Lag B'Omer takes place this year from Monday 11th - Tuesday 12th May 2020.

Lag B’Omer is a minor Jewish holiday that occurs on the 33rd day of the Omer, a 49-day period between Passover and Shavuot.

Scroll through the videos, recipes and challenges and have a go at the things that catch your eye.

You can also have a look at some of the pictures in the gallery from the Year 10 Lag B'Omer Residential last year.

Lag B'Omer Challenge

THE CHALLENGE IS TO MAKE A PLAYLIST FOR THE OMER – REFLECTING THE MOOD AND THEMES FOR EACH DAY

In addition to marking time, some use the omer period as a spiritual preparation for Shavuot and the remembrance of receiving the Torah. Each week, people focus on a new value as follows. The translations here reflect a Kabbalistic understanding and we have also included some ideas to get you started:

  • Hesed – Lovingkindness - Fix You (Coldplay), One Day (Matisyahu)

  • Gevurah – Discipline - Revolting (from Matilda the Musical)

  • Tieferet – Compassion - You’ve got a friend (Carole King)

  • Netzach – Endurance - Theme from Chariots of Fire

  • Hod – Humility - My Song (Elton John), Hello (Adele)

  • Yesod – Bonding - Hinei Mah Tov

  • Malchut – Sovereignty, Leadership - We are the Champions (Queen)

The songs don’t need to have the words (discipline, compassion, etc.) in them or have a direct connection to the holiday; they can be songs that express the emotion or essence of the day. Send in your playlist ideas to slevan@jcoss.barnet.sch.uk and we will add them to this website for future years!
